In determining the goals of therapy, some may want to forget the past and deal with current situations. I agree that dwelling on the past is not helpful. However, if past events are negatively impacting the lens in which you experience the present then understanding and resolving those experiences is important for meaningful change to occur.
In order to achieve these goals, I work with a model called AIP (Accelerated Information Processing) which is based on the assumption that the brain tends to deal with and process disturbing events that lead to an adaptive and healthy resolution. If, however, there have been situations in the past that are painfully emotionally charged, it is possible that this healthy process is blocked, and current feelings and behaviors are not always appropriate (or useful) to the here and now. So if you experience repeated outdated/self-defeating behaviors from the past they may be keeping you from experiencing the change you desire today. It is possible that you have prior events that have been “hardwired in” that keep you stuck. Customized approaches are collaboratively agreed upon and used to resolve these blocks and move on in your life.
You will literally reconstruct new beliefs and experiences that support the way you want to be and feel. You will in a sense "rewire your brain's neruo-networks" and "download new thoughts and feelings."
